Americans Want Healthcare That Includes Food as Medicine

A recent survey commissioned by The Rockefeller Foundation reveals that Americans—across political lines—overwhelmingly support integrating food and nutrition into healthcare to treat and prevent chronic illness. While awareness of Food is Medicine (FIM) programs remains low, enthusiasm soars once people understand the concept.
FIM programs provide access to healthy foods, nutrition education, and personalized dietary support as part of medical care. The survey found that:
- Over 80% of Americans believe healthcare should include more food-based programs.
- Nearly 90% of patients would prefer healthy eating over medication to manage conditions.
- Strong bipartisan support exists for insurance coverage of FIM—85% of Democrats and 78% of Republicans agree it should be treated like any other medical intervention.
Although few respondents had heard of FIM beforehand, once given a definition, the vast majority saw its value. These findings highlight growing public demand for holistic approaches that make nutrition a formal part of health treatment.
