Delaware State University Student Receives Fellowship for Research Into Improving Nutrition in Staple Foods
Student to Receive Prestigious Fellowship Presented by the Coalition for Grain Fiber
Wilmington, Delaware, DATE- Delaware State University student Mekhai E. Abrams received the Marie Clark Taylor CGF Fellowship from the Foundation for Innovation in Healthy Food’s (FIHF) initiative, the Coalition for Grain Fiber (CGF).
Abrams is a student in the Integrative Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences Program at Delaware State University.
“With the environmental challenges the world is currently facing, it is crucial that we develop solutions to maintain food security. Because of this reason, I have a strong interest in plant physiology, stress tolerance mechanisms, and crop improvement,” said Abrams, a PhD candidate at DSU. “My dissertation research will focus on the genetic improvement of strawberry for resistance to fruit rot disease, which causes yield losses globally. I hope that one day with my research I am able to play a role in ensuring the world has a sustainable food source in the future. I am grateful to be a recipient of the Marie Clark CFG Fellowship, and look forward to learning and building connections with like minded scientists!”
The distinguished fellowship was created in honor of Dr. Marie Clark Taylor, the former dean of Howard University. As an educator and botanist, Dr. Taylor was one of the most prominent scientists of her time. The fellowship in her name honors bright students researching plant science for the benefit of all socioeconomic groups globally.
Members of the CGF will present Abrams with the award.
