WORKING TOGETHER FOR HEALTHIER FOODS.

The Foundation for Innovation in Healthy Food (FIHF) builds coalitions of stakeholders that support increasing the nutritional value of the foods we consume, while preserving consumers’ food experiences. Our goal is to save thousands of lives and billions of dollars in annual healthcare costs.

OUR FIRST INITIATIVE: THE COALITION FOR GRAIN FIBER

The Coalition for Grain Fiber gathers stakeholders that support increasing the grain fiber we consume while preserving consumers’ food experiences. The resulting increase in fiber intake may reduce the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions.

who we are: thought leaders and pragmatic executors

FIHF and its initiative involve leaders eager for non-partisan opportunities to collaborate and to deliver beneficial change across industry and society.

Foundation for Innovation in Healthy Food

  • Leverage science to better satisfy human needs
  • Support development and high-profile outreach for increased nutrient foods
  • Align incentives so all stakeholders benefit
FIHF collaborates across the supply chain with food scientists, farmers and manufacturers, retailers, healthcare, community groups, and nonprofits to efficiently bring forth innovative solutions. By working together, we can improve society’s food systems.

Purpose and Operations

Is food production, tightly linked to climate change, sustainable? Across society, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes abound. Our current scientific wisdom and food delivery systems offer the potential to satisfy most nutritional needs, but this potential does not necessarily lead to healthy, sustainable diets.

Economist Gary Yohe, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize for his collaborative work on climate change and endorses FIHF’s research, posed a challenge: “What if educating consumers doesn’t cause them to eat more healthfully?”

This Foundation is our answer.

FIHF celebrates cultural and individual food choices and bypasses reliance on behavioral change to initiate benefits. Instead we aim to improve raw ingredients and staple foods — a first step in supporting individuals to make healthy choices. We recognize the food supply chain’s innovative capability and minimize the pain and cost of adapting current practices.

With conscientious design and sound science, we align stakeholders and communities, allowing businesses to do well by doing good, nonprofits to improve societal systems, and governments to deliver greater positive outcomes for all.

The key to our efforts is collaboration across organizations that value public health, allowing us to implement mechanisms that support healthier alternatives for consumers. The best part: aligned incentives mean all stakeholders benefit from solutions delivered.

FIHF’s approach has much in common with that of the World Cocoa Foundation’s (WCF’s) efforts. You can view the TedX presentation about WCF here. Our approach for maximizing the healthful potential of wheat published in the journal Nature Food is here.
